Annual Wellness or Preventive Medicine Visits: What’s the scoop?

11/30/2018

We tend to go to the doctor when we have a problem or things are not going well with our health. But do we make time for a wellness or preventive medicine visit each year? If we are honest, most of us don’t. An annual wellness or preventive medicine visit helps give your doctor an overall picture of your health and wellbeing. It allows time together to plan for how to improve your health, as well as building your relationship with your doctor. It also keeps you as an established patient with your doctor’s office.

What is included in an annual wellness or preventive medicine visit?

  • Review or update of your medical history
  • Identify risk factors and conditions before they become active problems, such as how to prevent falls
  • Review current medicines, over-the-counter drugs and supplements, like vitamins
  • Identify age and gender appropriate routine health screenings
  • Guidance and education on self-management and lifestyle changes you may need to consider, such as:
    • emotional health (feeling down or depressed)
    • help to stop smoking or tobacco use
    • treatment for alcohol or drug use
  • Exercise or physical activity level

What is not included?

Current health issues you are already having are not included in an annual wellness or preventive medicine visit. Examples of medical conditions that would be taken care of at a separate problem-focused visit include:

  • Pain
  • High blood pressure
  • Cold or cough
  • Headaches

We regularly hear we should maintain our health by eating a balanced diet, getting plenty of rest and exercising daily. What we don’t always hear about is having an annual wellness or preventive medicine visit.

If you have not had an annual wellness or preventive medicine visit in the last 12 months, talk to your doctor’s office about scheduling this important service focused on your health. Be sure to let them know the appointment is for a Medicare annual wellness or preventive visit. This will allow them to ensure there is enough time set aside for your appointment.

Even if you are healthy, it is a good idea to have an annual wellness or preventive medicine visit at your doctor’s office. Make an appointment today!
