Cancer Screening Preventive Guidelines
Screening Test Recommendation
Breast Mammogram

Screening mammogram, with or without clinical breast examination, every 1-2 years for woman age 40 and older is recommended.

Cervical Pap smear

Screening for cervical cancer beginning within 3 years of sexual activity or age 21 (which ever comes first) then every 3 years after 2-3 normal annual tests is obtained.

Screening is recommended until age 65 if they have had adequate recent screening with normal Pap smears and not otherwise at high risk for cervical cancer.

Colorectal Colonoscopy

Screening colonoscopy every 10 years starting at age 50 until age 75 is recommended. The starting age is lowered to age 45 for African Americans.

Exception: If the member has a first degree relative who had colorectal cancer or adenomatous polyps prior to age of 60, they should be screened starting at age 40 or 10 years younger than the diagnosis of their relative, whichever is earlier. If the first degree relative was diagnosed after age 60, they should have their screening start at age 50.
